The arrival of a very important person in her office seemed to be the start of a lot of problems for Kit Colbana, investigator extraordinaire. J.C. Daniels' Shadowed Blade is the Fifth installment in the Colbana Files. If you are new to this series, please allow me to summarize what has happened to this point. Kitasa aka Kit Colbana is a 1/2 human, 1/2 Aneiri warrior, private investigator. She has faced her fair share of challenges since leaving her island behind and finding her way to East Orlando where she is still considered to be an illegal. As the story opens, Kit is working with Justin Greaves.
Justin has been a friend and colleague for the past 3 years. He is a curiously powerful witch who has stood by Kit's side through a whole lot of topsy turvey. Kit and Justin have a similair end game. Find the elusive Blackstone and bring them down for what they are doing to non-human's in the Southeast US. Kit is also working for the POTUS on missions that are a bit odd, & every bit as curious as they appear. Why is POTUS looking for a Dryad? Why is a powerful witch chasing after Kit and Justin?
And if that weren't interesting enough for you, a powerful stranger shows up and apparently she knows Kit all too well. No spoilers. Kit's own life hasn't exactly been all fun and games for the past year. She's still a bit broken, although she won't fully admit it. Not since she was attacked and brutalized by a monster who broke her spirit and her connection to her weapons. Weapons that would normally sing to her, and have been with her since running away from her island. But, this only scrapes the top layer of what happens in this book.
First, I loved Nova. Such a twisted, & powerful character who truly was the star of this story. Then comes Rana. Oh wow. Let's open up the way back machine and introduce a major part of Kit's life, and then, let's really kick it up a notch so that Kit is left dumbfounded. How about little Doyle growing up all big and...what was that reveal? Holy cats! Heh Heh. Get it. Cats? I am so glad that Kit has found herself again. After a year of being out of sorts with her own weapons, now it's time to up her game even more. I know you all are going to hate me. ::sigh:: But, I am still not a fan of Demon. Yes, I am calling him Demon. He is way over possessive and over assertive and needs to be kneed on the balls a few more times to get him to back off. I will say that this book has its fill of twists, and suspense, and for the first time, I feel as though I am ready for the author to finally give Kit the future she deserves even if it is with Demon, and not Justin.
Negative: There are a whole lot of issues with the beginning of the book. There is a disconnect, and the story is a bit discombobulated before finally being ironed out. I do believe this story could have been a bit longer. There was no need to hurry up and end the story. Also, it appeared to me as though a full chapter was removed from the beginning. Not sure if that was the case, or a major editing error, but something to really think about.
